Abstract
This dissertation explores determining the viability of stormwater supplementation into an existing reticulated water network within the Central West region of NSW, specifically Bathurst, NSW. Although discussion around water reuse can interchangeably mean effluent recycling, the scope of this project is focused purely on stormwater harvesting.
In order to adequately determine the viability, multiple sites will be considered with one ultimately selected for modelling. A combination of urban stormwater runoff and rural catchment modelling will be undertaken to determine if the most effective use of the stormwater is likely to be in conditions approaching or in a drought.
Once those parameters are established, they will be considered against existing water storage reservoir historical levels as well as historical residential water consumption to provide analysis on the viability of a local stormwater harvesting system to be utilised into the exiting reticulated infrastructure. Stormwater harvesting is not yet a widely implemented strategy across Australia. There is some guidance in water health guidelines and stormwater design guides, but typically there is not a large amount of defined literature.
The research project will serve to assist Bathurst Regional Council or any other LGA in a temperate climate in understanding the potential viability in supplementing their reticulated water networks to improve water security in times of drought while implementing measures to ensure strict quality guidelines are met.
