Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic System

NG, Benjamin Woon Soon (2010) Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic System. [USQ Project]

Abstract

Photovoltaic system converts solar irradiance directly into electricity. There are different kinds of photovoltaic panel available in the market. Data collection was carried out in order to plot I-V curve. These data were collected in a particular day from 8 AM to 5 PM. I-V curve can be used to determine the characteristic of specific photovoltaic panel. It can be used to compare with the specifications that are provided from the manufacturer. It indicates the operating period of the specific solar panel. From the I-V curve, another curve can be obtained; which is known as the power curve. This curve shows the peak power that can be generated from that specific photovoltaic panel. From different time period throughout the day, there are different amount of peak power generated. A photovoltaic panel is aim to generate the same amount of power with these peak power so that no energy is wasted.

In order to collect data from the photovoltaic panel, lots of equipment is needed e.g. Volt and Amp meter, variable resistor, and etc. This project is also aim to develop a circuit that were able to generate I-V curve automatically through oscilloscope. This circuit was developed using various electronic component such as: thyristor, capacitor, resistor and etc. It is easy to operate as well as time saving.

The final part of this project consists of real-life application. Solar calculator was created to perform technical calculation. From this calculator, the area needed for installation of photovoltaic system was obtained as well as power generated from this photovoltaic system. The result of this calculation was compared with real-life energy data from a plant nursery. It involves the economic part of the photovoltaic system. The excess energy that the photovoltaic system generated will be purchase by the local grid supplier. From there, the payback time of the photovoltaic system can be calculated.
