Nitrogen Loading Ram Reliability Project for 10E10 Pulverised Fuel Mill

Harris, Timothy (2024) Nitrogen Loading Ram Reliability Project for 10E10 Pulverised Fuel Mill. [USQ Project]

Abstract

This research project has arisen due to reliability and performance issues of the nitrogen loading rams on the coal pulverisers for the power station. This issue has both an economic and reliability impact on the business. The N2 rams are integral to the performance of mills to efficiently produce pulverised coal for burning in the furnace. The need for this failure investigation meets the requirements for a formal root cause analysis in accordance with Stanwell policies and procedures. The following key objectives of this research project will include:
a. Failure mode assessment
b. Review of data
c. Root cause analysis
d. Improvement recommendations
e. Implementation and validation of solution

To carry out the failure analysis an engineering approach was used to successfully achieve the specific objective outlined above using the below methodical approach: -
1. Review of historical failure history on the N2 rams
2. Carry out a review of literature and failure modes of the N2 rams to identify probable causes
3. Create a testing regime around the probable causes and gather supporting evidence through testing and inspection
4. Identify the root cause and establish appropriate solution going forward

After a successfully completing this project and implementing the solution the breakdown works involving N2 ram failures has reduced, and no early failures of the implemented solution have been recorded. However, due to the long running nature of the mills and the quantity of N2 rams it is likely to be close to twos years before having the full realisation of the success of this project.
