‘Go in but Stay Out’: Community Insights on Safe and Inclusive Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy

Abstract

Psychedelic-assisted-Psychotherapy (PAP) is gaining recognition for its potential to treat complex mental health conditions. Australia is the first country to approve psilocybinassisted therapy for treatment-resistant major depression (TR-MD). This study constructs thematic insights from lived psychedelic experiences in naturalistic community settings, contributing to the evolving understanding of PAP and the development of safe, inclusive clinical practices amid a climate of uncertainty. Utilising data from an open-ended questionnaire completed by 51 individuals, the study employs an inductive Artful Interpretative Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) to amplify community voices organically interpreted through the Gestalt lens of the author. Three key themes emerged: "Trust the Process," "An Expression of the Subconscious," and "Seeing Through New Eyes." Each theme is discussed reflexively, offering practical insights for practitioners to consider when conceptualising this novel therapeutic modality. These insights are designed to help practitioners meet clients where they are, supporting responsive and ethically sound practice. By exploring the subjective realities of psychedelic use, this study complements existing literature with context-sensitive, human-centred perspectives that enhance our understanding of the nature of psychedelic experiences and the therapeutic dynamics in PAP.
