Loughran, Alaina (2024) Exploring How Women with Endometriosis Use Social Media to Seek Support and Gain Knowledge for the Self-Management of their Condition. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Current literature highlights that women with endometriosis often experience insufficient knowledge and support regarding their condition within the healthcare system. Women use social media to obtain information on the endometriosis condition, share personal experiences, and establish connections with others. The intention of the current study was to examine how women with endometriosis use Reddit to seek support and gain knowledge for the self-management of their condition, using the Information-Motivation-Behavioural Skills model. Three research questions were formulated that aimed to further explore and understand this goal. A total of 194 threads were collected from the r/endo subreddit and a thematic analysis was conducted. Three themes (information, motivation, and behavioural skills) were present and six subthemes (endometriosis experience, endometriosis care, personal life impacts, social existence impacts, management strategies negative, and management strategies positive) emerged from the data. The current research study provided insight into how women with endometriosis can be supported by the healthcare system, in addition to a framework for an endometriosis Information-Motivation-Behavioural Skills model. Further research could expand on the current study by implementing the conceptualised Information-Motivation-Behavioural Skills model in an interview context to further understand women’s endometriosis experiences within the Australian healthcare system.
