Abstract
Ultraviolet radiation, which naturally exists in sun rays, has been damaging mankind and manmade things in terms of health and deterioration of the structures, respectively. So, there is a potential need to look into this issue and come up with a possible solution, in terms of radiation shielding materials. The current project will investigate into the ultra-violet radiation shielding property of glass fibre reinforced epoxy composite filled with zinc-oxide nanoparticles. Samples fabricated of varying compositions, different volume fractions of zinc-oxide will be used as specimens for the evaluation.
The dispersion of zinc-oxide nanoparticles within the epoxy resin was facilitated by ultra-sonification technique. Thus fabricated specimen were subjected to ultra-violet radiation shielding test by using the sun as the source of UV and a solar light model-3D UV meter as the measuring source. Sequentially, a series of flexural and tensile strength tests were performed on the specimens according to their volume fractions, by using the MTS machines. All the data obtained were tabulated and their analysis was done by the aid of graphs and figures, included in this report.
Based on the results obtained from the analysis of experimental data it is determined that the volume fraction of 14% is the optimum composition, at which the specimen has exhibited highest UV shielding and relatively higher tensile and flexural strengths.
