Abstract

The increasing pollution and the environmental changes revealed some shocking facts that could well be the start of next saga. The world currently faces serious problems due to increasing use of fossil fuels and has become increasingly dependent on it, which is diminishing in sources and increasing pollution as the after effect of over usage of these fossil fuels. With a vision of accomplishing 3 noble tasks viz., to fix/control the climate change, to end dangerous poverty and to protest injustice & inequality, by 2030, UN collaborated the 193 global leaders (countries) with a commitment to 17 global goals. Currently, energy is sourced mainly using fossil fuels which is having a negative impact on environmental and economic conditions on the nations across the globe. So, there is an increasing need for research on alternate fuels for reducing consumption of fossil fuels for different purposes. One of the main uses of usage of fossil fuel in engineering apart from mainstream fuel is for lubrication. So, this research is being carried out to identify lubrication alternatives to fossil oils.

This influence of the fossil fuels on mankind’s lifestyle gripped the focus of the author of this report to conduct research on one of the feasible alternate fuel solution, the waste cooking oil. The main aim of this research is to analyze existing facts and analyze if waste cooking oil can be a better alternative for lubrication. Using the experimental procedure, the researcher analyzed the properties of waste cooking oil as lubricant and tested and compared it against fossil oils. The researcher measured the viscosity of the waste cooking oil at different temperatures and its lubricity was tested using High frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) test. The viscosity of the oil was observed after using graphite additives in the range of 2mg to 20mg to analyze the effectiveness of oil for lubrication. The effectiveness was observed at different spindle speeds and temperature to analyze the usefulness of the waste cooking oil as lubricant. The findings highlighted that the oil blended with additive increased viscosity of the oil and improved properties of it and made it good alternative for lubricant but if used in heavier equipment it can worn debris, which lead to abrasion and removal of materials.
