Abstract
[Abstract]: This dissertation was formulated to research the impacts that road network data errors and their associated navigation errors have on driver safety. Simulation of GPS NMEA data allows navigation testing
of roads that were identified to have poor quality road network data. The navigation errors were found by comparing the navigation paths with reality and the severity of these errors were tested by replaying this data to a group of drivers.
The results indicate that poor quality road network data can cause problems with respect to driver safety. These problems are more pronounced on busy major roads, especially freeways and urban highways. All roads tested in this project were chosen due to their various locations and the variety in the overall nature of the roads, ranging from a country road to a busy freeway.
Several problems were identified that may attribute to the cause of navigation errors. They range from software functions in the satellite navigation system to the prolonged period of updating road network data by different levels of government and mapping companies. An innovative set of solutions has been formulated, which include the
automatic mapping of erroneous roads and the regular updating of road network data. This can be facilitated through better practices by governments and mapping companies, plus voluntary updating of maps by civilians.
The outcomes of this dissertation will aid in bringing forward safer usage, better overall accuracy and the smooth operation of satellite navigation systems, whilst maintaining their increasing popularity throughout Australia.
