Abstract

The size and complexity of deregulated energy markets requires the use of simulators to assess how changes can affect the whole market. This dissertation presents the
development of a MATLAB based energy market simulator based on the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM). Background research was conducted on the NEM to gain an understanding of the organisation, management and the technology deployed within the network. Raw data on the NEM was analysed to understand demand and pricing and how different generation technologies are operated. This data was then used to create a generic simulator capable of analysing electrical supply systems. The simulator was then used to demonstrate the benefits and problems with market managed systems and the impacts intermittent renewables can have on electrical supply systems.
