An Experimental Study Comparing Natural and Built Environment Impact on Adult Mood States

Alfaro, Kali (2007) An Experimental Study Comparing Natural and Built Environment Impact on Adult Mood States. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

The aims of this study were to address the hypotheses that participants engaged in a demanding cognitive task and then exposed to a different environment will show an increase in positive mood as assessed by the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS); and that participants exposed to the natural environment condition will report a greater decrease in negative mood. The aim of the present study was to also answer the question: are there differences in what people report as salient in the natural compared to the built environment in relation to their mood? If so, what features of natural and built environments are reported from photos and texts in photovoice interviews? Thirty undergraduate psychology students were first administered the BRUMS to determine baseline mood and then asked to engage in completing WAIS III matrices which was the mood manipulation. Results indicated that participant’s positive mood was not significantly increased after environmental exposure as measured by the BRUMS. However thematic analysis showed that participants in the natural environment group were observed to have an increase in positive feelings. Finally, results indicated that there are more positive effects arising from experiences in natural environments in contrast to built environments.
