Emotion Regulation, Mood States and Semantic Memory

Abstract

This pilot study aimed to determine if three mood states Depression, Anxiety and Stress influenced performance during two modalities of Semantic Memory tasks. Additionally it aimed to explore if Depression, Anxiety and Stress correlated with two emotion regulation strategies Cognitive Reappraisal, and Emotion Suppression. University Psychology students completed online self report measures of the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS 21), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (EQR), and semantic memory category tasks across two modalities (visual and linguistic). Although mood failed to influence memory performances the correct identification of category membership was produced more frequently than not. Correlations were not established between mood with emotional regulation or memory, or between emotional regulation and memory, yet findings found support for contributions of emotion regulation upon memory task performances which may relate to selective attentional focus, but these were only beneficial in the short term. Unexpectedly, modality of memory influenced responses with increased frequency for correct responding found during the visual task, compared to the word format. New methodological designs for both modalities (visual and linguistic) of the online semantic memory tasks were successfully developed. Recommendations for future research included validation of the online semantic memory tasks and further exploration of how and why the modalities produced variances in participants’ performances, as well as a need for closer examination of the interactions between emotion regulation, attentional shifts and memory.
