Changes in Affect and Their Impact on Cancer-Related Health Behaviours

Abstract

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. A growing body of literature indicates that modifiable health behaviours such as smoking are responsible for a large proportion of cancer cases. The existing literature exploring the influence of affect on modifiable cancer risk behaviours has been inconsistent. Gaining a better understanding of the underlying causes of poor health behaviours enables researchers to develop more effective interventions and ultimately reduce cancer incidences. The present study builds upon previous research and aims to investigate whether positive and negative affect fluctuations would have an impact on the following health behaviours: smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and diet. Participants aged 18 to 86 years old (N = 819, M = 53.71, SD = 17.69) completed a cross-sectional survey measuring affect using the Positive And Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and frequency of smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and diet both on average/in general and in the last seven days. Health behaviours were assessed using questions from previous research and Australian guidelines. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to assess whether positive and negative affect changes were significant predictors of health behaviours. Results indicated that changes in positive affect were associated with changes in physical activity. Correlation analysis revealed significant relationships between negative affect and physical activity and between negative affect and diet. The present findings further highlighted the need to investigate different motives that might influence one’s engagement in cancer-related health behaviours.
