Bourke, Joanne (2008) Telling Sequences in Research Interviews. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
This qualitative thesis presents a discursive analysis of a telling sequence within a selected data segment from New Zealand Interview 2 (van den Berg, Wetherell, & Houtkoop-Steenstra, 2003, pp. 233-236). Using conversation analysis, interviewer and respondent verbal behaviour is examined to determine whether both conversational conventions and orthodox research interview conventions are used to co-construct the trajectory of the telling sequence to achieve alignment and intersubjectivity between the participants. The telling sequence is further examined for conformity to canonical features as described by Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson (1974) and Schegloff (2007), and follows on from the work of Armstrong (2007). The study concludes that the telling sequence adheres to the canonical features described in the literature and that both the interviewer and the respondent use conventions of both interviewing practice and mundane interactions to achieve intersubjectivity. This is apparent through the underlying co-constructed nature of the interaction displayed in the telling sequence. The major implication of the study is that conversation analysis might be usefully applied to the clinical interview to examine how the participants shape the trajectory of a consultation. This might then carry possible further implications for clinician training in interview techniques.
