Bruggemann, Karen (2011) Antecedents of Anxiety and Mood in Freestyle Martial Arts. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The current study investigated situational and individual antecedent factors associated with anxiety and mood in a cohort of freestyle martial artists from southeast Queensland, Australia. A heterogeneous group of 131 male and female martial artists of various ages and ranks completed questionnaires related to antecedent factors, mood and anxiety, prior to and after a grading competition. Measures included the Pre-Grading Questionnaire (PGQ), the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS), and the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory – 2 Revised (CSAI-2R). As hypothesised, perceived readiness was a strong predictor of cognitive anxiety intensity, cognitive anxiety direction, self-confidence intensity and self-confidence direction. It also predicted variance in mood scales related to tension, depression and confusion. Other pre-grading antecedent factors also predicted part of the variance in tension (coach/others influence), cognitive anxiety intensity and cognitive anxiety direction (coach/others influence, external influences, attitude to previous performance). Somatic anxiety had a small effect on self-referenced feelings about performance outcome. Females reported higher cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and tension scores and lower self-confidence. They also reported a reduced interpretation of anxiety as facilitative, although this was not significant. These findings have implications for pre-grading preparation of performers in martial arts and add to the theoretical information about antecedents of anxiety and mood.
