Clarey, Megan (2013) A Discursive Examination of Motivational Interviewing. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a therapeutic style initially instigated by William Miller which has been found to be an effective method of treating substance abuse and a number of other behavioural issues over time. A wide body of research exists identifying the efficacy of MI as a therapeutic intervention method, effectiveness of training in MI and examining interactions between MI practitioners and their clients in the counselling room. What is missing from the research is an extensive review of how competent MI practitioners implement the MI skillset, or spirit of MI in therapeutic settings. Using a pure Conversation Analysis (CA) approach to analyse Miller himself, this study began by using ‘unmotivated looking’ to see if any specific phenomena could be identified. The conversation that was analysed was public domain video footage of Miller describing MI in an interview with two psychologists, Judy Lewis and Jon Carlson. The analysis of this footage identified that Miller uses embodied talk extensively throughout the interaction. What the review did not identify is whether the embodied talk is specific to the reviewed interview or if it is specific to Miller’s MI skillset. It is acknowledged that this is a pilot study and opens potential further research into embodied talk within MI therapy to identify whether embodied talk is an integral tool in the competent MI practitioner’s practice.
