The Experience of Older People Attending a Respite Centre

Crespo, Jorge Ruiz (2012) The Experience of Older People Attending a Respite Centre. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experience of a group of elderly people who visit a Respite Centre and in particular, to explore their experience of monthly visits by a group of students from the local high school. Seven visitors to the centre were interviewed. Data was collected in semi-structured interviews, designed to portray a rich and comprehensive description of participants' experiences using interpretative phenomenological analysis (Smith, 1996). Three interrelated themes emerged from the analysis. Firstly, the “Experience of Self and Life” which helps to understand how the elderly people perceived themselves and the world around them. The second essential theme was the “Experience of the Respite Centre” and how the visits to the Respite Centre contributed to participants’ lives. The third theme extracted was the “Experience of the visiting boys” which described a positive albeit incomplete encounter with the young people. The overall impression gained was one of a positive and remarkable group of people who defied many ageing stereotypes. In spite of physical limitations, these elderly people were interested in the world around them, in having relationships with other people of their own age and with younger people.
