Abstract

The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationships between attachment styles, social anxiety and self-esteem among Facebook users. Two hundred and twenty-one students and general members of the public (173 females, 48 females) who use Facebook, aged 17 to 60 (M = 30.25, SD = 9.23) completed an online survey. Measures included the Relationship Questionnaire (attachment), the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Social anxiety was positively correlated with fearfulavoidant and preoccupied attachment, and negatively correlated with secure attachment and self-esteem. Self-esteem was positively correlated with secure and dismissiveavoidant attachment and negatively correlated to preoccupied and fearful-avoidant attachment. Exploratory analysis found Facebook usage was positively correlated to preoccupied attachment. An exploratory hierarchical regression found that attachment styles, social anxiety, and age together accounted for 47.8% of the variance in self-esteem. A second exploratory hierarchical regression found that attachment styles, age and gender together accounted for 10% of variance in Facebook usage, though attachment styles accounted for no significant variance in Facebook usage when age and gender were controlled. Building on this study, future research is needed to understand how these variables are related to what motivates an individual to utilise Facebook.
