Abstract

The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was used to predict and explain caregiver’s intention for their child aged 0-6 to wear a hat, wear sunscreen, wear sun-protective clothing, wear sunglasses and stay in the shade. Caregivers’ (N = 59) completed an online survey measuring their attitudes, subjective norms (SN), perceived behaviour control (PBC) and intentions towards each of the sun-protective Cancer Council recommendations regarding their child. Results found that the TPB was able to predict each sun-protective behaviour, however the unique significant predictors for each sun-protective behaviour were different. Caregiver intention for their child to wear a hat was predicted by attitude, SN and PBC, to wear a sunscreen was predicted by attitude, to wear sun-protective clothing was predicted by attitude and PBC, to wear sunglasses was predicted by attitude and PBC, and to keep their child in the shade was predicted by PBC. As the measurement of the individual sun-protective behaviours is original research, future research should firstly focus on replication of these results. It is hoped that this research can lead to improved, focused sun-protection campaigns and assist in increasing the use of all sun-protective behaviours by caregivers.
