Drummond, Allanah (2022) Cancer Screening: Prompts to participation in National Programs. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
This study looks to question what prompts people to participate in national cancer screening programs, and what the differences are between programs (Bowel, Breast, Cervical). The data for this study was collected as part of a larger project and the participants of interest for this study where those from the larger group that had participated in cancer screening programs and have an Australian Medicare card. The design of this study was exploratory qualitative research, using open text responses and content analysis. The main findings of this study are that there are several common prompts to participation in cancer screening programs and that these are similar across types of cancer screening. The implications of these findings are that a combined effort to increase the participation in screening programs could be made. Using the Integrated screening action model behavioral changes could be made that align with the different stages in decision making for cancer screening. This would allow for different interventions to be designed based on the stages and could be adapted for each of the screening programs and the idiosyncrasies of that type.
