Fox, Sarah (2011) Effects of Team Cohesion on Performance and Affect: A Meta-Analysis. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Numerous studies have examined the effects of team cohesion in sport and exercise settings. The aim of the present study was to review all available and relevant literature surrounding the effects of team cohesion on performance and affect. Meta-analytic statistical procedures, under a random-effects model, were used to assess the strength of the relationship and influence of potential moderating variables. Moderating variables of interest included; (a) research quality, (b) type of task, (c) type of sport, (d) level of competition, (e) era, (f) country, (g) gender, (h) cohesion measure, (i) sub-dimension of cohesion, (j) performance measure, (k) affect valence, and (l) affect measure. A total of 56 studies, yielding 315 effect sizes from 18, 591 participants, were eligible for inclusion in the analysis. For inclusion, studies were required to be published, measure cohesion prior to performance and affect measures, and report statistics adequate for the calculation of effect sizes. The overall standardised mean effect size was .542, indicating that team cohesion had a significant moderate benefit on performance and affect. Further analyses showed that the team cohesion benefit was stronger for performance (d = .631) compared to affect (d = .365). The team cohesion benefit was also found to be robust across era, country, cohesion measure and sub-dimension of cohesion. The present findings, combined with previous meta-analyses, provide empirical support for the effects of team cohesion with practical implications for sports psychologists, athletes and coaches of team sports.
