Gray, Elizabeth (2014) Short-term effects on parent attitude, parenting style and child behaviour following a brief parenting program. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
This study reports the evaluation of a brief parenting program conducted with 26 parents of children (aged 4-8 years) in community settings. 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching (Hawton & Martin, 2006) is a brief (3 sessions) parenting program designed to enhance parents’ use of effective behaviour management techniques and emotion coaching with their children. Parent training has been previously linked with positive outcomes for child behaviour, parenting behaviours and parental attitude. Parents were allocated to intervention or waitlist control groups based on location and date of program delivery. Parents completed baseline and post–program measures assessing their use of ineffective parenting behaviours (laxness, over reactivity, hostility), attitude (satisfaction and efficacy) and problem child behaviour. Program retention was high and post program, parents reported significant improvement in child behaviour and overall parenting attitude. No significant differences were found in terms of ineffective parenting behaviours. These outcomes suggest use of 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching as a brief parenting intervention in a universal population may have potential benefits however further investigation is required to determine effects in relation to these parent and child variables. Keywords: brief parent training; community based, universal prevention, child behaviour, emotion coaching, parenting behaviours, parenting attitude.
