Relationship of Dimensions of Self-Regard to Resilience

Abstract

Resilience has been identified as an important factor by the nation in developing the mental health sector in Australia. Currently research has recognised predictors of well-being and resilience, however, have not investigated dimensions of self-regard and resilience. Research into this area would provide more information on factors that contribute to resilience and would lead to additional strategies for interventions and promote resilience. This study aimed at examining whether dimensions of self-regard, specifically self-liking, self-competence, unconditional self-acceptance would predict resilience. Utilising the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) to measure resilience, the Self-Liking and Self-Competence Scale (SLSC) using the two subscales of the SLSC to measure self-liking and self-competence, and the Unconditional Self-Acceptance Questionnaire (USAQ) to measure unconditional self-acceptance, were assessed in a convenience sample of 354 participants. To investigate the relationships between self-reports of resilience, self-liking, selfcompetence and unconditional self-acceptance, hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used. The study found self-liking, self-competence and unconditional self-acceptance were significant (p < .001) predictors of resilience. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that high levels of self-liking, self-competence and unconditional self-acceptance would predict high resilience.
