Hitchcock, Jane A. (2019) Item Interactions and Irrelevant Speech Produce False Memories. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Recent research has shown evidence of false memories occurring in short-term memory (STM) tasks using the long-term memory (LTM) Deese-Roedeger-McDermott (DRM) lists. Previous research in STM has shown that pre-existing semantic networks can enhance correct list recall, pre-existing phonological networks and irrelevant speech can disrupt correct recall and all can produce recall of an unpresented critical lure in those same tasks. Phonological codes in irrelevant speech have recently been found to produce false memories in the DRM paradigm in immediate serial recall tasks for to-beremembered lists of semantic associates. The current study amalgamates these STM factors by exploring the effect of semantic codes in irrelevant speech on lists of phonological neighbours using DRM lists in immediate serial recall tasks. Semantic associates and phonological neighbours were studied in quiet and irrelevant speech conditions. The same effects as in LTM and STM tasks for enhancement and disruption of correct list recall was found for associates and neighbours respectively. Irrelevant speech disrupted correct recall for both associates and neighbours. False memories were found under all conditions and higher in the irrelevant speech conditions for associates, but contrary to expectations lists of neighbours with associates in the irrelevant speech recall of the critical lure did not occur equally as frequent as lists of associates with neighbours in the irrelevant speech.
