Abstract
Childhood UV exposure can significantly increase lifetime risk of skin cancer. Consequently, it is important to properly perform sun protection behaviours during childhood, so as to reduce the risk of skin cancer developing later. However, most children are unable to perform sun protection behaviours for themselves, and must rely on caregivers to perform the behaviours on their behalf. This includes applying sunscreen to the child while out in the sun. Previous studies examine caregiver-for-child sunscreen use tended to aggregate sun protection behaviours, which meant that findings might not be specific to each individual behaviour. The theory of planned behaviour, widely used in health and sun protection behaviour research, has been noted to have its limits. To this end, an additional variable, anticipated regret, was used in conjunction with the theory of planned behaviour to assess its utility in adding to the theory’s predictive utility. A survey was employed to assess caregiver use of sunscreen on their children, examining the theory of planned behaviour factors, and anticipated regret, to predict caregiver intentions and behaviours. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine the predictive utility of the factors on intentions. Behaviour was unable to be examined. Results indicated support for the theory of planned behaviour as having utility in predicting caregiver sunscreen use. Results also indicated anticipated regret having utility in being used in conjunction with the theory of planned behaviour.
