Hutchison, Elyse M. (2019) Suicide prevalence, risk and protective factors in adolescents and youths with autism spectrum disorder: A scoping review. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Suicide is a complex health concern of global importance. However, there is limited understanding of suicidal behaviours among adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is understood that individuals with ASD are approximately seven times more likely to die by suicide than the typically developing population. The purpose of this scoping review was to synthesise evidence relating to the prevalence of suicidal behaviours and identify potential risk and protective factors amongst adolescents with ASD. The scoping review, using keywords related to suicidal behaviours, ASD and adolescents identified seven articles that were evaluated in conformity with study objectives. Findings revealed that suicidal behaviours are a significant issue for neuro-atypical individuals and were observed to be present in 7.5-62% of samples. Risk factors were found to include, symptomatology, victimisation and comorbidity. Protective factors were not included in the studies reviewed. ASD and suicide are both complex phenomena, the former difficult to diagnose and the latter arising from multifaceted, interacting factors. Studying the relationship of suicide among populations with ASD therefore presents compounded complications of not well understood interconnections, resulting in little empirical evidence on this relationship. Based on the findings of this review, additional research is required to better understand this relationship.
