Hyvonen, Catherine (2008) Individual Differences in the Prediction of Accidents. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The main objectives of this study were to examine if individual differences could predict accidents. The 250 drivers each completed a safety survey. The survey was validated using a principal component analysis to assess the domains of driver attitudes, safety locus of control, stress tolerance, quality attitude, and risk avoidance. Scores from the scales were examined through correlation and regression analysis. Stress tolerance and safety locus of control have an association with accident. Further, when stress tolerance is controlled, driver attitudes, safety locus of control, risk avoidance and quality attitude did not contribute to the prediction of accidents. Further research needs to clarify specific driver attitudes, and investigate the relationship of safety locus of control and accidents. Research needs to consider the precedents to work stress, its consequences and how it can be effectively managed. Using individual differences in the prediction of accidents is difficult, due to the accidents being rare and uncommon events, and the individual being influenced by their own perceptions, attitudes and the work environment.
