Abstract
An assumption made by various distributed storage models, is that recall performance involves the representation of an item in short-term memory, as phonological codes, activated simultaneously with semantic representations of an item, such as category membership, from a long-term memory store. The current experiment incorporates the assumptions of the cues plus codes approach, to investigate the effects of priming on cued recall performance, using the cued recall paradigm. The duration of priming effects, were also of interest, that is, if there was a difference in recall performance, after a one second verbal distractor activity was introduced. In order to test this, a convenience sample of 42 participants, completed the cued recall task, with 21 participants tested immediately after the last item on the list was shown, and 21 participants tested after a one second delay, where they were required to say aloud a two-digit number that was presented after the last list item. The results indicated, frequency of target recall increased in trials were the target word was primed, when compared to a control condition. Evidently, similar findings were also seen in trials priming the foil, where foil recall increased compared to a control condition. A comparison of results from the immediate test condition were compared to the delayed condition, where it was found that the effects of priming seen after an immediate test, decreased after the introduction of the one second delay, for both the foil priming trials and the target priming trials.
