Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the word length effect and the impact the strength of the manipulation may have upon how words are remembered and recalled from short-term memory. This question was investigated by applying metaanalytical techniques to the body of literature published on word length effect. This study is ground breaking in that no other meta-analytical studies have been conducted which investigate any aspect of the word length effect. The results suggest that the strength of the manipulation has no significant bearing although there are indications that syllable count does play some part in the capacity to recall some words better than others. The primary finding of this study lies however in the inability to utilise meta-analytical techniques with any confidence because of how the experimental data are reported in the literature. It is strongly recommended that authors always report means and standard deviations when compiling the results section of their papers since this will allow standardization of calculating the effect size.
