Knight, Jacquelyn (2013) Australian Category Norms: Differences in Responses of Age Groups. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Category norms are used in research on learning and memory; however previous category norms are largely based on participants who were introductory university students. This study aimed to investigate whether people respond differently to categories depending on their age. The Australian Normative Database, based on paper surveys collected by multiple researchers since 2009, was used to address the research question. Participants were grouped as Young Adults (25 years or younger; N = 184) or Other Adults (Over 25 years; N = 587) and Chi-Square Tests of Independence were undertaken on 75 categories. Results indicated significant differences between the age groups in 77.33% of categories (p < .001), with 12 categories having a large effect size (Cramer’s V > .5). Nine categories were found to be robust to differences between age groups. The study highlights the need for researchers and practitioners to be mindful of the use of category norms to ensure they are using age-appropriate normative data or those categories which are less likely to be affected by age. It also supports the need for the development of normative database that include a wide variety of ages, such as the Australian Normative Database.
