Lang, Alexandra (2020) Cognitive Flexibility in Job Search: A Career Self-Management Perspective. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Recent instability and changes in the employment climate have required individuals to become more active in the management of their careers. Emerging evidence suggests finding employment has become a more challenging experience that can have detrimental effects on the psychological and physical wellbeing of individuals. This study sought to examine the ways in which cognitive flexibility, an executive function that enables an individual to shift perspectives in order to adapt to changes in the environment, can influence job search behaviours. Specifically, utilising the pathways proposed in the Social Cognitive Career Theory Career Self-Management model, this study investigated the relationships between cognitive flexibility, job search self-efficacy and outcome expectations. A convenience sample of (N = 73) participated in study. A descriptive correlational study design was employed, via the Inquisit 5 (Millisecond) software program. No significant relationships were observed between cognitive flexibility, Job search self-efficacy or outcome expectations. Cognitive flexibility also did not influence the existing relationship between the variables. These results are likely due to a number of methodological weaknesses evident in the current study, including the technological platform employed. The findings of this study will contribute to existing literature on job search behaviour and may promote future research.
