Lehane, Niki C. (2015) Preliminary Exploration of Work Satisfaction and Optimism as a Precursor to Improving Health Outcomes Among Australian Farmers. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Farmers are among those with the poorest health outcomes (i.e., increased morbidity and mortality) in Australia across a range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression. This research project explored the relationship of two constructs known to influence health outcomes of CVD and depression, work satisfaction ii and dispositional optimism. Work satisfaction was conceptualised using Lent and Brown’s (2006) Social Cognitive Career Theory work satisfaction model. The first study systematically reviewed literature to examine relationships between work satisfaction and optimism in populations comparative to Australian farmers, and evaluated the scales used. It was concluded that optimism is related to, predictive of, and uniquely contributes to work satisfaction in populations comparable to Australian farmers. In addition, the first study identified the Life Orientation Test Revised (LOT-R) as the most suitable scale for measuring optimism among populations comparable to Australian farmers. However, a suitable work satisfaction scale was not identified. To address the lack of suitable work satisfaction scale, the second study qualitatively analysed archival data using thematic content analysis to identify work related themes among Australian farmers. Three superordinate themes were identified and discussed in the context of work satisfaction. It is anticipated that future research will utilise themes identified in the development of a work satisfaction scale suitable for use among Australian farmers.
