Abstract

The employability of higher education graduates is of major concern to the Australian economy. There are higher rates of unemployment in Australia than previously documented (6.2%). Key issues related to employability have been its development and measurement. Higher education institutions have the potential to address graduate employability issues and subsequently promote economic growth. However, there are few tools to evaluate the development of employability. The most useful measure identified was the Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). Although the construct validity of the CEQ has been explored there has not been a recent analysis to confirm its measurement properties. In order to begin to address the construct validity of the CEQ, the present study examined the factor structure of its subscales of employability and good teaching in a sample of higher education graduates (N = 73, 694). Results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated an adequate fit for the three CEQ subscales of interest to the empirical data. Structural equation modelling indicated that the effect of teaching quality on employability was moderated by generic skills self-efficacy. These results support the construct validity of the CEQ and, the influences of teaching contexts and generic skills development to employability. While these findings were consistent with previous research from a social-cognitive career perspective, the predictive utility of the CEQ Good Teaching and Generic Skills subscales is highlighted for further research.
