Marks, Mellissa (2014) An Investigation of the Impact of Problem-Solving Skills Training on the Ability to Problem Solve and on Emotional Well-Being. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether problem-solving skills training was an effective intervention for individuals who were living in the community and recovering from varying degrees of mental illness and who were at risk of not sustaining independent housing. Substantial research suggests that problem-solving skills’ training is an effective treatment for clinical populations; however, research was limited for small sample sizes within marginalised populations. Five participants from a community-based-recovery mental health setting completed problem-solving training (PST) over six weeks. Participants completed measures on problem-solving, psychological distress and group satisfaction and results were analysed using the reliable change index (RCI). Although the hypotheses were not supported, preliminary results detected a trend towards improved problem-solving abilities which may indicate that PST could be an effective intervention for individuals recovering from mental illness. In addition, results suggest an improvement in levels of psychological distress and session satisfaction; however, several limitations have been identified, and recommendations are made for future research.
