Abstract
The Saccadic Tracking Test (STT), originally developed by Reischies and Berghofer (1995), examines visual scanning abilities. When compared to other tests of visual scanning, such as the Trail Making Test (TMT), the STT eliminates the need for graphomotor abilities, which is an advantage when assessing individuals with potential motor function limitations. The purpose of the current study was to determine the most appropriate method of measuring visual scanning performance, establish psychometric properties of the STT’s final form, and develop Australian normative tables accordingly. The final normative sample of 246 participants was recruited from the South-East Queensland region. Results showed that calculation of a mean correct response time clearly established a reliable measurement of visual scanning ability, which enabled the construction of a final 10-item version of the STT. Australian normative data tables were established and stratified by age and gender. This study found the STT to be a robust, highly reliable measure (.91) of visual scanning performance that is correlated with the TMT, suggesting they may be interchangeable. However, based on the current normative sample, the STT should be used with caution for individuals over 50 years of age, due to the limited number of participants in this age group. Future clinical research could further the evaluation of the STT’s sensitivity to detecting deficits in visual processing speed and accuracy beyond what is currently known.
