Abstract
Due to advances in technology, today’s business environment is more globalised than ever before. One outcome of this globalisation has been the rise of ‘virtual teams’ and ‘remoteemployees’ in the workforce. Virtual teams consist of employees working in geographically disperse locations, who use electronic communication such as email and video conferencing to interact rather than face-to-face contact with their employers and co-workers. Virtual teams provide benefits for employers and employees including, reduced overhead costs, increased skill/talent pools and more flexibility. However, research has shown that virtual teams have unique challenges due to their limited communication channels. These challenges include lower levels of job satisfaction and poor employee retention. It is proposed that the immersive nature of virtual reality (with its multi-sensory experience) may be a successful way of upskilling virtual teams in teamwork skills to help ameliorate some of the challenges these employees face. This systematic literature review aimed to assess how virtual reality is being used for upskilling and training teamwork skills in virtual teams. Thirteen studies met selection criteria for inclusion in the review. It was found that variations of virtual reality technology were successfully being used to upskill participants in four key teamwork skills including: collaboration, conflict management, communication and problem solving. Upskilling was found to be occurring in a limited number of industries with the studies’ results reporting positive learning transference through virtual technology. Further research is required to examine the efficacy of newer virtual reality technologies use in training teamwork skills to enhance job satisfaction.
