Christian-Based Residential Treatments for Substance Use Disorder: A Systematic Literature Review

Ogilvie, Claudette (2016) Christian-Based Residential Treatments for Substance Use Disorder: A Systematic Literature Review. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

Christian-based residential treatments for substance use disorders exist in many western countries. The objective of this systematic literature review was to determine the effectiveness of these programs in reducing substance use and/or associated mental health problems. Using structured search terms, seven databases were searched (Medline, Cinahl, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, and Cochrane) from their inception to April 2016. For studies to be included in the review, the interventions needed to be Christian-based, residential, and intended for substance using individuals. Nine studies with 430 participants met the inclusion criteria. Two independent researchers rated the methodological quality of each study using a standard checklist. Although most studies showed consistent improvement in substance use and mental health, 89% of the articles were rated as low or very low quality. Problems in design and methodology of the studies have resulted in many biases and confounding variables. Therefore, firm conclusions cannot be drawn regarding the reported effects due to these limitations in the existing literature. This review highlights the need for more rigorous evaluations of current Christian-based residential treatments in order to effectively examine their efficacy. Recommendations are made for improving the design and methodology in future studies.
