Reid, Joanna (2012) Presenting Problems: A Discursive Examination of Psychological Consultations. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Problem presentation (PP) is considered central to diagnosis and treatment planning in psychological therapy. However, there is little research that has examined how this works in real-life consultations. This study used Discursive Psychology (DP) to examine how PP is discursively occurs in initial consultations. The data comes from audio recordings of two consultations from a university psychology clinic and two consultations from a rural primary health practice. PP was found to occur in a sequence identifiable by the inclusion of a problem invitation (PI) from the psychologist and a PP from the client. Analysis indicated that prior knowledge was relevant to construction of the psychologist’s PI. The client’s PP was found to focus on justifying the visit to the psychologist. A clearer understanding of these interactions suggests a need to review current psychologist training and registration requirements.
