Robertson, Diane (2012) Parental Bonding and Gratitude: Impact on Materialism. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Three hundred and forty one participants were surveyed to explore the relationship between parental bonding (levels of mother and father care and overprotection), gratitude and materialism. Parental care and overprotection were measured using the Parental Bonding Instrument (Parker, Tupling, & Brown, 1979), gratitude was measured using the Gratitude and Appreciation Test – short form (Thomas & Watkins, 2003) and materialism was measured using the Material Values Scale (Richins & Dawson, 1992). Hierarchical regressions were used to control for age and to determine if parental bonding would predict materialism. Age and maternal overprotection were the strongest predictors of materialism, such that older participants were less materialistically inclined and those who recalled their mothers as controlling or intrusive reported greater levels of materialism. Other parenting sub-scales were not found to predict materialism. A simple regression revealed levels of parental care were significant predictors of gratitude, but levels of overprotection were not. A final regression analysis revealed gratitude did not significantly predict materialism. This research highlights the importance of considering the association between parenting behaviours, gratitude and materialism. A greater pool of evidence aims to support the creation of more informed education and parenting programs.
