Rose, Adam (2018) Motivational Interviewing: Conversation Analysis. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Motivational interviewing (MI) has been shown to be extremely effective at increasing motivation for change. However the causal mechanisms behind this effectiveness have yet to be fully elucidated. Thus this research aims to explore this overlooked issue by explicating the interactional accomplishment of the MI process. It placed a focus on how the therapist and client manage the processes of engaging, focusing, evoking and planning in an MI therapy session. The research used archival data in the form of video-recordings of MI therapy sessions. With a focus on long continuous segments of therapy dialogue instances of MI skills such as open questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries that were framed towards accomplishing the MI processes were identified. Conversation analysis was then conducted to examine the overall form and function of the MI method. This research produced several findings. Firstly, the therapy talk unfolded in a manner than was largely linear. That is, the client and therapist collaborated to navigate through the MI processes in a way that was for the most part unproblematic. However, sources of trouble in conversation, such as a lack of mutual understanding of the interactional activities, resulted in a more circular trajectory. This study contributed to the understanding of the MI process and as such may influence MI literature and training practices. This study also highlighted the benefits of a focus on long continuous sections of therapy dialogue.
