Abstract

Drink driving is a leading cause of preventable road injuries and fatalities worldwide. Accordingly, numerous countermeasures have been implemented to combat the same. However, there exists a subgroup of drink drivers that seem impervious or undeterred by these countermeasures, as they continue to reoffend despite receiving legal sanctions for their behaviour. Consequently, these recidivist offenders undermine the legitimacy of enforcement practices, along with continuing to contribute to global road fatalities. Therefore, the present study aimed to contribute to the recidivist drink driving (RDD) literature by conducting the first meta-analytic synthesis of the predictors of recidivist drink driving behaviour. Seventeen studies met eligibility criteria for inclusion, resulting in 59 predictors of RDD being identified. These predictors were subsequently grouped into four factors: alcohol, criminal, driving, and deterrence. The results demonstrated significant small effects for all four factors, however, considerable heterogeneity was present in the factors analysed, likely due to the individual differences of the offenders themselves. These findings highlight the need for future research to develop a multifaceted approaches to examine the range of interrelated factors found to be predictive of RDD. Doing so will help to facilitate the development of appropriate and timely prevention, intervention, and rehabilitative measures to reduce reoffending rates, thus reducing the harmful consequences associated with RDD.
