Roxborough, Tayla (2019) Validating the Comprehensive Assessment of ACT Processes (CompACT) on an Australian Non-Clinical Sample. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) centres on the key concept of psychological flexibility: the ability to be accepting and fully present whilst constantly adjusting behaviour to service an individual’s values. Psychological flexibility has been found to consistently moderate psychological distress and promote mental and physical health and wellbeing. Psychological Flexibility is achieved through six dynamic processes that develop over time. The most widely-used measure of psychological flexibility, the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II), does not adequately capture all six core processes. To address this, Francis, Dawson and Golijani-Moghaddam (2016) developed a new scale called the Comprehensive Assessment of ACT processes (CompACT). The current study replicated the Francis et al. (2016) study on an Australian non-clinical sample with the aim of assessing the factor structure, reliability and validity of the CompACT. Participants consisted of 209 Australians (35 male and 174 female), aged between 16 and 80 years, who responded to an online self-report survey. The CompACT was found to be a reliable measure that demonstrated appropriated convergent and discriminant validity. A confirmatory factor analysis failed to show a stable three-factor structure, however, one was established through an exploratory factor analysis. The present study, along with future research, will help to increase the utility of the CompACT. This may benefit ACT research and interventions, and thereby promote psychological flexibility and improve the health and wellbeing of individuals.
