Salama, Mary (2015) The Application of Career Construction Theory: Career Adaptability and Life Satisfaction in Retail Employees. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
To improve one’s ability to adapt to the changing workforce, past research has explored the role of therapeutic methods in a career counselling setting. However, the literature on schema-focused therapy as a therapeutic approach for career counselling is scarce. Through the application of Career Construction Theory (CCT), a theoretical model, the present paper aims to explore how the constructs of early maladaptive schemas (EMS), vocational calling and work volition relate to the CCT’s dimensions of adaptivity, adaptability, adapting and adaptation in a sample of 138 retail workers. Results from standard multiple regression analyses supported the hypothesis that EMS, vocational calling, and work volition significantly predict career adaptability. Together, the variables accounted for approximately 15.4% of the variance in career adaptability (R = .39, F(5,125) = 4.55, p = .001). This model identified vocational calling as a unique predictor of career adaptability. Results also showed that EMS, work volition, vocational calling and career adaptability, significantly accounted for 36% of the variance in life satisfaction (R = .60, F(6, 124) = 11.36, p < .001). Three unique predictors emerged from the model, including, EMS, career adaptability and work volition. These results provide support for the use of EMS as an operational form of career adaptivity. In addition, this study builds a pathway for future research to explore the application of schema therapy in a career counselling context.
