Schoots, Karen (2020) Evaluating the Impact of Learner Driver Mentoring Programs in Australia: A Systematic Literature Review. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Introduction: Learner driver mentoring programs (LDMPs) began in Australia to help novice drivers achieve the driving experience required to apply for a provisional licence. Varied graduated driver licensing schemes (GDLS) operate across the country and require learner drivers to achieve between 50 to 120 driving hours, or six months experience before sitting a licence test, however, attaining this practice can be problematic if learners have no access to driving supervisors or vehicles. LDMPs evolved to help disadvantaged learners, with the aid of mentors, achieve their compulsory driving practice. This systematic literature review (SLR) explores the impact of LDMPs on learners, mentors and Australian society. Method: Systematic literature searches were conducted on electronic databases (i.e. Ebscohost Mega file Unlimited, Wiley, Taylor and Francis, Informit, Science Direct, QUT ePrints and Google Scholar). Domain names (.gov.au, .org.au, .com.au and .edu.au), website names (i.e. CARRS-Q, RACQ, RACV, RYDA, TMR, RAA, TACC, AANT and RAC) and pertinent authors were searched using Advanced Google Search (AGS). Organic searches were conducted for grey literature and relevant cited articles. Titles, abstracts and full-text articles were screened to assess if they met certain inclusion or exclusion criteria. Studies were evaluated, in regard to learner driver, mentor, societal and road safety benefits, best practice guidelines, funding and limitations. Ethics: Ethics approval was not required for this study as there was no confidential data, participants or interventions.
