Sekar, Shamini Grace (2016) Stress among family caregivers in comparison with non-caregivers of older adults: A Cultural Perspective. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Stress among family caregivers is a widely growing concern as the number of older adults have been rapidly increasing due to the decrease fertility and mortality rates. Despite the growing interest and the large number of studies that address the issue of stress among family caregivers, there is limited research that explore the impact of cultural values on the perception of burden among family caregivers in India. Therefore, this study has chosen a sample of Indians living in South India. The study aims to 1) gain an understanding of the effect of cultural values and beliefs on family caregivers, and 2) to determine if there is any difference in the cultural values between persons providing care for a frail older adult and non-caregivers. A total of 62 participants (Males = 21, Females = 42) responded to a series of questionnaires including the Positive Aspects of Caregiving scale, Sabogal Familism and Acculturation questionnaire, stress, ethnicity, and caregiving battery of questionnaires, and the Intercultural Values Inventory. Results indicated that culture had no effect on perceived caregiver burden but positively predicted positive attitudes towards caregiving. Further, it was found that male and female caregivers did not differ in their perception of caregiver burden, and that caregivers and non-caregivers showed no significant difference in familism values. Power analyses conducted using the means and standard deviations of this study indicated that generalisability of findings can be achieved with a larger sample using the same instruments. Future research that focuses on validating the findings of the current study using a larger sample size is recommended.
