Influence of Curiosity and Exploration and Openness on Resilience

Abstract

To improve resilience in a population and thereby increase the likelihood of well-being and/or improved mental health is the focus of much psychological research. The Australian government has more recently chosen to also focus on maximising resilience as a means of enhancing policy procedures and outcomes. Several past studies have pointed to various determinants of resilience, yet until recently there has been a scarcity of compelling conceptualisations or research which have addressed curiosity and exploration, and openness as predictors within adult populations. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of two particular dispositions; curiosity and exploration, and openness to experience, to reported resilience, through analysis of responses on the embracing and stretching subscales of the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II (CEI-II), the International Personality Item Pool (Openness) Scale (IPIP-O), and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Responses of convenience sample of 349 participants were analysed using hierarchical multiple regression. That analysis found that the embracing and stretching subscales were significant predictors of resilience (p < .001). This finding was consistent with two out of three research hypotheses. This study also found that embracing mediated the effect of stretching on resilience. Limitations of the study, implications of findings, and suggestions for future research are offered.
