Does resilience moderate the effects of stressors on stress/burnout for Australian doctors?

Abstract

Burnout and stress are known to cause distress and dysfunction to a medical doctor impacting their personal and professional lives, and potentially their patients and co-workers. Previous studies have typically focused on the causes of stress and burnout, tested personality types, reviewed self-care techniques, or considered peer and social support networks and their effectiveness in alleviating stress and burnout symptoms. However, there is a lack of research on the effects of resilience as a buffer. In this study, the role of resilience was tested for its ability to moderate stress and burnout from workplace stressors, thereby determining if resilience will protect doctors against negative mental health outcomes. The investigation was conducted using the data of N = 209 medical practitioners gathered from around Australia. While the moderation analysis did not demonstrate that resilience had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between stressors and mental health, the analysis did demonstrate the significant role resilience played in reducing the effects of stressors on stress and burnout. The results have widespread practical implications for teaching and medical institutions, where factors that contribute to resilience can be taught, or addressed and supported structurally within the workplace, to reduce the effect of stressors on stress and burnout.
