Wagstaff, Enna (2019) The Relationship Between Anxiety and Comorbid Depression, Using a Self-Help Internet Program. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Anxiety is highly prevalent in childhood and adolescence and can have devastating effects on functioning if left untreated. BRAVE Self-Help is a self-directed, open-access program freely available to the public, and aims to overcome barriers to treatment. Although BRAVE Self-Help has been shown to be effective for many young people, it is important to examine which young people do not respond to self-help iCBT. This study aimed to examine whether depression would moderate the relationship between baseline anxiety and treatment outcome (changes in anxiety and anxiety severity category), following a self-help iCBT program for anxiety. The participants included 866 children and adolescents aged between 7 and 17 years who had participated in an open trial of BRAVE Self-Help. Anxiety and depression symptoms were measured at baseline, and reductions in anxiety were measured at every session throughout the program. The results showed that depression was not a moderator. However, anxiety and depression predicted treatment outcome in different ways for children and adolescents. Findings indicated that self-help online programs can benefit young people with varying levels of anxiety. However, the findings suggest that adolescents may find self-help online programs more problematic.
